Fishing, main activity
There are currently around 150 fishermen. Ten years ago, they were twice as many. The driftnet ban, mackerel shark fishing ban, failure in the reconverting process for red tuna fishermen, and retirement have accelerated the situation.
But fishing is not finished. It’s still a dynamic activity and is a strong part of islander identity. Fishermen fish high value species using a selective fishing technique (line, net, pot). Fishermen of the island have assets and it should lead to a sustainable activity.
For example fishermen now tackle tuna fish with hooks. These fish can be directly purchased from the fishermen. Tuna is great raw or grilled.
