Le Grand Phare

Historic site and monument ,  Lighthouse in L' Île-d'Yeu
  • Following the numerous shipwrecks on the north coast, the authorities had the 1st lighthouse built on the Ile d'Yeu at Petite Foule in 1830.

  • Following numerous shipwrecks along the north-west coast, the authorities had the first lighthouse on the Île d’Yeu built on the heights of La Petite Foule in 1830.
Destroyed in August 1944 by German occupation forces, the Grand Phare was replaced in 1951 by a new structure with modern lines, to ensure safe navigation south of the Loire.
Standing 41 metres tall, this first-class lighthouse rises 56 metres above the open sea and its white beam can be seen for almost 30 miles.
