SAINT AMAND PARISH, ILE D'YEU

Numerous religious buildings bear witnesses to the deep faith of the islanders down the centuries. They are modest and sober, in the blue and white colours of the sea and the Virgin Mary. They are to be found everywhere on the island, in the villages and along the coasts. Originally a monastic sanctuary, and later the parish church, the Eglise Saint-Sauveur dates from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. A second seat for the parish was created in the nineteenth century in Port-Joinville, when the Church of Notre-Dame of the Port was inaugurated in 1829. It has since been enlarged and transformed several times. The chapel Notre-Dame de Bonne Nouvelle first appears in records from the fifteenth century. Its white silhouette dominates the port of La Meule and the ocean, and is a reference point for sailors to this day. The chapel of Père de Montfort was built in 1835, then enlarged in 1889 on the site of a martyrdom statue erected at Ker Châlon in 1712. The chapel of Notre-Dame de la Paix was built in 1944 to invoke the Queen of Peace. It is close to the site of the former monastery of St. Hilaire, where St. Amand received his monastic training at the end of the sixth century.

Located near the church of Notre-Dame du Port, the reception is open from Tuesday to Saturday morning (10 am - noon) for requests for baptisms and marriages, dedicated masses, and meeting with a priest.
