La Cavatine devotes its summer concert to the oratorios of its beloved Handel. It was in Italy that the young Saxon composer discovered the Roman genre of the oratorio, a kind of sacred opera in which his creative genius would excel. His first attempts caused an immediate sensation in the Papal City.
His Resurrezione (1708), performed here in part, was already an absolute masterpiece in the genre, which he took to new heights once he settled in London, creating a typically British style of oratorio. The magnificent arias and duets in The Messiah (1742) and the other English oratorios on the programme testify to an exhilarating musicality, great expressive richness and sublime spirituality that delight the ear, the heart and enlighten the soul.
