The defences of the Île d’Yeu adapted over the centuries to advances in artillery. From the Gauls, who fortified the Pointe du Châtelet, to the medieval castle reinforced with a bastioned enclosure, and then to the 17th-century redoubts protecting the landing beaches, each era left its mark.
