“Pierre Turbé, the islander hero of the Free French Forces, 1940–1944”
In 1926, this native of the island joined the merchant navy, travelling in particular to the Far East and the French Pacific islands. General de Gaulle’s appeal on 18 June 1940 led him to enlist from Shanghai, China. As a member of the Resistance, he travelled the world (Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia).
