“A History of the Defence of the Île d’Yeu, from Fort Pierre-Levée to the Second World War”
As late as the mid-19th century, the strategic position of the Île d’Yeu led the Military Engineers to build a new fort on the heights of Les Deux Moulins. This citadel served successively as barracks and then as a state prison. In 1940, German forces seized it and incorporated the island into their coastal defence system, many remains of which can still be seen today.
