Carmen, a universal opera that first saw the light of day on the Grands Boulevards 150 years ago.

Danielle Georget is a journalist and author. She was editor-in-chief at *Paris-Match* for many years and has written several books on the Kennedy dynasty, as well as a *Dictionnaire amoureux de l’Ukraine*. Last year, she published *Carmen des grands boulevards* with Robert Laffont.
In her book, she recounts the origins of this opera – now the most frequently performed in the world – despite its premiere having been met with boos at the Opéra-Comique in 1875. In what artistic, sociological and political context was this masterpiece created in the heart of Haussmannian Paris? Who was Georges Bizet, that brilliant yet ill-fated composer who died three months after the premiere of *Carmen* without ever knowing of its success?

To tell us this story, Danièle Georget will be accompanied by her daughter on the violin for a few musical interludes as a preview of the opera, which will be performed at Les Cytises on 6, 8 and 10 August as part of the Escales lyriques festival.

Free admission, from 11.00 am, at the Citadelle meadow, opposite 31 Rue de Pierre-Levée.
