What remains of the post-war international order? President Trump’s decision to withdraw from 66 international organisations and conventions, and military interventions carried out without a UN mandate, signal the death knell for multilateralism. We are now witnessing the rise of empires and high-stakes power struggles, which may or may not result in deals between the world’s major powers seeking to expand or consolidate their territories.

What can Europe do in this context if it does not wish to become a vassal state, even though the rule of law is the cornerstone of its very existence, sometimes to the point of excess?

And what can France, the cradle of human rights, do to contribute to a Europe – a European power – that would not betray our values?
These are broad perspectives that we will explore with Michel Sapin, former Minister
for the Economy and Finance, now an international lawyer.
