Opéra Carmen

Carmen is one of the world’s most famous operas.

Composed by Georges Bizet and premiered in Paris in 1875, it tells the passionate and tragic story of Carmen, a free-spirited and independent young gypsy who refuses to conform to the conventions of her time.

In the city of Seville, she seduces Sergeant Don José, who gives up everything for her sake.

But Carmen craves freedom above all else and soon turns away from him for the famous bullfighter Escamillo.

Torn by jealousy and unable to accept this lost love, Don José sinks into a destructive passion that will lead the two lovers to a tragic fate.

Set to music of exceptional richness, *Carmen* features a succession of now-legendary arias, such as the *Habanera*, the *Seguidilla* and the *Toreador’s Song*.

Combining passion, freedom, jealousy and fate, this vibrant opera continues to captivate audiences around the world nearly one hundred and fifty years after its premiere.
