Smart Islands
L'île d’Yeu has just been recognised by the European Economic and Social Council for its initiatives. We recently joined the Smart Islands group.
The idea is to promote good practices in terms of sustainable development and energy transition. The Ile d’Yeu intends to move to all-electric transport, and there are more than 100 electric vehicles on the island today, a number growing all the time.
We also encourage walking and cycling. In this context a 27 km cycle loop is being studied for short journeys, just as has already been installed for hikers, approved by the hiking federation in 2014.
THE WIND FARM
Another major project, the offshore wind farm of the islands of Yeu and Noirmoutier provides for the installation of 62 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 8 MW over an area of 83 km2.
It will be located 11.6 km from L'île d’Yeu and 16.5 km from Noirmoutier, where the seabed ranges from 17 meters to 35 meters deep.
The wind farm should produce on average 1900 GWh per year, which represents the annual electricity consumption of approximately 790,000 people, more than the entire population of the Vendée.
